How Sales Tax Works
Adding Tax (Exclusive)
When you see a price listed as "plus tax", you need to add the tax amount to get the final bill.
Formula: Total = Net Price + (Net Price × Rate / 100)
Example: ₹100 + 10% Tax = ₹110.
Extracting Tax (Inclusive / Reverse)
Sometimes the price listed includes tax (e.g., "MRP (Incl. of all taxes)"). To find the real price of the item, you need to remove the tax.
Formula: Net Price = Total Price / (1 + Rate / 100)
Example: If Total is ₹110 and Tax is 10%:
Net Price = 110 / 1.10 = ₹100.
Sales Tax vs. VAT vs. GST
While the names differ by region, the math is generally the same for the end consumer.
- Sales Tax: Usually added at the point of sale (common in USA).
- VAT (Value Added Tax): Included in the price at every stage of production.
- GST (Goods and Services Tax): A unified tax system (common in India, Canada, Australia).
