Metric vs. Imperial Weight
Just like length, weight is measured differently across the world.
- Metric System (Kilograms): Used by most of the world. It is based on water: 1 liter of water weighs exactly 1 kilogram.
- Imperial System (Pounds/Ounces): Used mainly in the USA and for body weight in the UK.
1 Pound (lb) = 16 Ounces (oz). - The Stone (st): Unique to the UK and Ireland. 1 Stone = 14 Pounds. It's mostly used for measuring human body weight.
Mass vs. Weight: The Physics
In daily life, we use "weight" and "mass" interchangeably, but in physics, they are different.
- Mass (kg): How much "stuff" is in an object. This stays the same whether you are on Earth, the Moon, or floating in space.
- Weight (Newtons): The force of gravity pulling on that mass. You weigh less on the Moon because gravity is weaker there, but your mass (kg) is exactly the same.
