What is a Stock Profit Calculator?
A stock profit calculator helps you find the Net Profit or Loss from your trades, which is the final amount you earn (or lose) after all charges are paid. Many investors only calculate "Gross Profit" and forget that brokerage and taxes eat into returns.
How Stock Profit is Calculated
The formula is simple:
- Gross Profit = (Sell Price - Buy Price) × Quantity
- Net Profit = Gross Profit - Total Charges
- Return % = (Net Profit / Total Buy Value) × 100
Understanding Charges
Your "Total Charges" usually include:
- Brokerage: Fee charged by your broker (e.g., Zerodha, Upstox).
- STT: Securities Transaction Tax paid to the government.
- Exchange Fees: Paid to NSE/BSE.
- DP Charges: Flat fee charged by CDSL/NSDL on selling delivery shares.
Taxation (STCG vs. LTCG)
Short-Term Capital Gains (STCG): Sold within 1 year. Taxed at 15%.
Long-Term Capital Gains (LTCG): Sold after 1 year. Profits above ₹1 Lakh are taxed at 10%.
