Resistors are too small to have numbers printed on them, so they use color bands to indicate their value. This system is an international standard (IEC 60062).

4, 5, and 6 Band Resistors

  • 4-Band: The most common type. Band 1 & 2 are digits, Band 3 is multiplier, Band 4 is tolerance.
  • 5-Band: Used for higher precision (1% or less tolerance). Bands 1, 2 & 3 are digits.
  • 6-Band: Includes a 6th band for Temperature Coefficient (PPM), indicating stability under heat.
