What is Ovulation?
Ovulation is the process where a mature egg is released from the ovary. This usually happens once every menstrual cycle. After the egg is released, it moves down the fallopian tube where it stays for 12 to 24 hours. If sperm fertilizes the egg during this time, pregnancy occurs.
The "Fertile Window" Explained
While the egg only lives for 24 hours, sperm can live inside the female body for up to 5 days. This means your "Fertile Window" is actually about 6 days long:
- The 5 days *before* ovulation.
- The day *of* ovulation.
Having sex during this 6-day window gives you the highest chance of getting pregnant.
How is Ovulation Calculated?
For a regular cycle, ovulation typically happens about 14 days *before* your next period starts.
Example: If your cycle is 28 days: Ovulation is on Day 14.
Example: If your cycle is 32 days: Ovulation is on Day 18 (32 - 14 = 18).
Our calculator automatically adjusts this math based on the "Cycle Length" you enter.
Signs of Ovulation
Apart from using a calculator, your body gives you signs:
- Cervical Mucus: Becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy (like raw egg white). This is the best sign of high fertility.
- Basal Body Temperature (BBT): Your resting body temperature rises slightly *after* ovulation has occurred.
- Mild Pain: Some women feel a slight twinge or cramp on one side of the lower abdomen (called Mittelschmerz).
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Q. Can I get pregnant outside the fertile window?
It is extremely unlikely. Once the egg is released and dies (within 24 hours), conception cannot happen until the next cycle.
Q. Is this calculator 100% accurate?
No calculator can be 100% accurate because our bodies are not machines. Stress, illness, or diet can delay ovulation. Use this calculator as a guide, but consider using Ovulation Prediction Kits (OPKs) for better precision.
Q. When should I take a pregnancy test?
The best time is the day after your missed period. Testing earlier might give a false negative because the pregnancy hormone (hCG) levels might not be high enough yet.
