What is Inflation? (The Silent Killer)

Inflation (mehengai) is the rate at which the general price of goods and services (like food, housing, and fuel) rises. As prices rise, the purchasing power of your money goes down.

It is called the "silent killer" of wealth because it erodes your savings, even if your money is just sitting in a bank account. This calculator shows you exactly how much more money you will need in the future to afford the same lifestyle you have today.

The Future Value Formula

The calculator uses the standard "Future Value" formula:

Future Value = Present Value × (1 + r)ⁿ
  • Present Value (PV) = The amount of money today.
  • r = The inflation rate per period (as a decimal).
  • n = The number of periods (years).

How to Beat Inflation

To grow your wealth, your money must grow *faster* than the rate of inflation.

  • Losing to Inflation: Savings account (~3%). If inflation is 6%, you lose ~3% value yearly.
  • Matching Inflation: Fixed Deposits (FDs) or PPF (~6-7%). Protects money but doesn't grow wealth significantly.
  • Beating Inflation: Equity Mutual Funds (SIPs) or Stocks (~12-15%). This is how you grow real wealth.
