How to Calculate Fuel Cost?
Planning a road trip? Calculating fuel cost is simple if you know three things: Distance, Mileage, and Fuel Price.
Formula: (Distance ÷ Mileage) × Fuel Price
Example: You travel 500 km. Your car gives 20 km/L. Fuel costs ₹100/L.
Fuel Needed = 500 / 20 = 25 Liters.
Total Cost = 25 × 100 = ₹2,500.
Understanding Fuel Efficiency Units
- km/L (Kilometers per Liter): Standard in India/Asia. Higher is better.
- MPG (Miles per Gallon): Standard in USA/UK. Higher is better.
- L/100km (Liters per 100km): Standard in Europe. Lower is better (because it measures fuel consumed, not distance traveled).
Hypermiling Tips (Save Fuel!)
- Check Tyre Pressure: Under-inflated tyres increase drag and fuel consumption by up to 3%.
- Use AC Wisely: At low speeds, open windows. At highway speeds (80km/h+), use AC because open windows create aerodynamic drag.
- Avoid Idling: If you stop for more than 1 minute, turn off the engine.
- Drive Smoothly: Rapid acceleration and hard braking waste a lot of fuel. Maintain a steady speed.
